Breast Lift with Implants

Breast Lifts (Mastopexies)

As most women age and undergo the effects of childbearing, the breasts, like other parts of the body, tend to become more droopy.  A breast lift (mastopexy) is an operation which attempts to correct this by tightening the skin envelope of the breast and moving the nipple-areola to a higher position. The result is a breast which is firmer and shapelier but is not larger, as would be the case when an implant is inserted during a breast augmentation.  Sometimes a combined breast augmentation and lift may be carried out if necessary to achieve the desired result.

A breast lift procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthesia in a private surgical facility.  The patient will go home once she has recovered from the anaesthetic.  She would be wearing a supportive bra for a few weeks after surgery so as to support the breasts thereby allowing them to heal with thinner scars.  The stitches are usually placed under the skin and dissolve on their own.

The scars which remain following breast lift surgery usually extend around the areola, under the breast and vertically between the two.  The stitches dissolve under the skin and do not have to be removed.  Depending on the shape of the breasts, scars may be limited to around the areola and vertically from the areola to the crease below the breast.  If necessary, a scar is also positioned in the crease under the breast.

Breast lift procedures may occasionally affect nipple sensation and breastfeeding, although most women undergoing breast lifts do so after they have finished having pregnancies.

Following surgery patients are directed to wear a dressing with an overlying supportive bra for a few weeks. This tends to make for more comfort, quicker healing and narrower scarring.

As with all surgeries, Dr. Samuel undertakes a thorough consultation with the patient.  At that time all aspects of the surgery, post-operative course and potential complications would be discussed so that the patient would have a full understanding and have the opportunity to have all questions answered.

If you are considering having a breast lift (mastopexy) with or without augmentation, please call Dr. Samuel’s office at 416-630-2715 or e-mail info@torontoplasticsurgery.net. His staff will be happy to assist you.
